About The Authors

E. DOUGLAS BOYDEN is president of the U.S. Volleyball Association. A national referee, he was chairman of the committee on officials and certification during 1953-59 and did much to help standardize officiating throughout the country. In 1956 he received the "Leader in Volleyball" award,* and in 1959 he was selected to conduct volleyball clinics in Hawaii and Japan for the U.S. Air Force. Along with Roger G. Burton, he is co-author of the book, Staging Successful Tournaments. Mr. Boyden is general secretary of the San Antonio, Texas, YMCA.

ROGER G. BURTON is executive secretary of the Downtown Branch YMCA, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is a vice-president of the U.S. Volleyball Association, chairman of the rules committee, member of the U.S. Olympic Games committee for women's volleyball, and "Leader in Volleyball." He is coauthor of the book, Staging Successful Tournaments, and author of numerous articles concerning volleyball. In 1959 he conducted clinics for the U.S. Air Force in Hawaii and Japan.

JOHN K. "DOC" CLARK is player-coach of the Knoxville, Tennessee, YMCA team and a national referee of the U.S. Volleyball Association. Mr. Clark has played on nine Southern Area championship teams and has been a perennial selection to the All-Southern squad.

GEORGE J. CRESWELL, JR., is executive secretary of the Downtown Branch YMCA, Jacksonville, Florida. He is a national referee, "Leader in Volleyball," and a former regional representative for Region Nine of the U.S. Volleyball Association. For six years he was volleyball coach at the Houston, Texas, YMCA; during that time his team won thirty-five tournaments, including the 1956 National AAU and the 1955 National Masters.

HOWARD G. DANFORD is a former athletic director and head of the department of physical education at Florida State University. He has done outstanding work in promoting volleyball among public recreation departments, schools, and colleges. In 1950 he received the "Leader in Volleyball" award. During 1954, 1955, and 1956 Dr. Danford conducted

volleyball clinics for the U.S. Army in Europe. He is now associate professor in the division of health and physical education, Colorado State College.

JAMES C. DEWEESE, JR., is associate general secretary of the Asheville, North Carolina, YMCA. He is a national referee of the U.S. Volleyball Association and a former officials' chairman for Region Five.

MURRELL EDMUNDS and WARREN W. SMITH combined their coaching abilities at the New Orleans YMCA to produce Southern Area championship teams in 1954 and 1955. Mr. Edmunds is a novelist and poet. He is the author of eight published books, some of which have been translated into foreign languages. Mr. Smith is general secretary of the Lawton, Oklahoma, YMCA and is a national referee of the U.S. Volleyball Association.

RICHARD C. NELSON is research assistant in the department of health, physical education, and recreation at Michigan State University. In 1957 he played for Ellington Air Force Base, which won the National Armed Forces title. During 1958 and 1959 he was player-coach of the Michigan State University Volleyball Club. He was an All-American selection in 1957 and 1959.

WILLIAM T. ODENEAL is an assistant professor of physical education and former varsity volleyball coach at Florida State University. His volleyball articles have appeared in many of the physical education and athletic journals. He is a national referee, former regional representative for Region Six, chairman of the committee on public relations, and! "Leader in Volleyball." In 1955, 1957, and 1958 Coach Odeneal's team won the National Collegiate championship. He directed clinics in 1955 for the U.S. Air Force in Greenland, Newfoundland, and Labrador, and in Hawaii and Japan; in 1959.

M. L. WALTERS is a national referee and "Leader in Volleyball." He was editor of the Official Volleyball Guide for four years, chairman of the committee on officials and certification, and director of the 1946 and 1951 national champion1-ships. He conducted clinics in Europe for the U.S. Army during 1951, 1952, and 1953. Mr. Walters is now head of the department of health, physical education, and recreation at Appalachian State Teachers College.

J. EDMUND WELCH is instructor in physical education at Emory University. He is secretary of the U.S. Olympic Games committee for men's volleyball, national referee, and current editor of the Official Volleyball Guide. He has had extensive experience in volleyball as a teacher, coach, official,, tournament director, and author.
